Medication Management

Outpatient Clinics Based in Richmond, VA

Offering medication evaluation and treatment for individuals from childhood into adulthood.

At Spectrum, we use a multi-disciplinary approach that may or may not include medications. We understand that the decision to consider psychiatric medication is often a challenging, multi-step consideration. You may have already tried many things to little or no success, and may continue to struggle with even daily activities. When used appropriately, medications can play a crucial role in the appropriate control of problematic symptoms, allowing you to fully enjoy life again.

We understand the strength it takes and the vulnerability you may feel in sharing your story and problems with us, and we honor and appreciate that trust. Careful consideration is given in recommending the appropriate medication regimen that we believe will help. We carefully balance the benefits and risks of medication, offering evidence-based treatment that takes your individual circumstances and preferences into account. We provide education regarding your particular problems and the medications we prescribe to help. We often blend therapy with medication management to foster and support better coping strategies, and to encourage healthy life habits and behaviors. We collaborate with you in giving our best recommendations, for you to ultimately choose the appropriate course of care, and we continue to walk with you to enhance that treatment to reach your goals.

Multiple disorders addressed may include but not be limited to:

  • Depression
  • Dysthymia
  • Generalized Anxiety
  • Panic Disorder
  • Social Anxiety
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
  • Bipolar
  • Schizophrenia
  • Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorders (ADHD)

Our prescribers are a team of advanced trained psychiatrists and nurse practitioners. Based on the information you give at the initial screening, Spectrum will match you to a provider who we believe can help. We aim to be compassionate and listen empathically at your first visit, as understanding your history and you as an individual is crucial. We value a comprehensive evaluation, so additional pieces of information may be requested, such as laboratory tests, genomic testing, and collateral information from friends, family, your therapist, and/or other medical providers (with your permission). After gathering history, your provider will give you a summary of their findings and their recommendations for both medication and non-medication perspectives. If medications are offered, options of which medications, pros and cons, benefits and risks, side effects, and expectations are extensively reviewed. We welcome questions and will do our best to answer and educate. Ultimately, we understand that this is a process, and we strive to work as quickly and efficiently as possible, in a methodical and responsible way, to achieve the goals we establish together.

FAQ

How do I begin?

To see if medications are the appropriate next step, please call us at 378-6141 or contact us online, and ask about medication management. If you are ready to start services, please complete and submit a Client Screening Form to start the initial screening process. On the Client Screening Form, please provide a brief but complete summary of all the problems you would like addressed. This is important, as some issues may be beyond the scope of an outpatient clinician to manage. Spectrum will then match you as best as possible to the appropriate provider. Some providers may offer both in-office and telehealth care, but some only offer one or the other. When our administrative staff contacts you after receiving your Client Screening Form, please make sure to clarify with them which you prefer.

What insurance coverage is accepted?

Spectrum Transformation Group accepts most private insurance plans, Medicaid, and self-pay. Please check with your individual insurance to verify coverage, including whether they cover only in office visits, telehealth visits, or both.

Does my provider prescribe controlled substances?

Your safety is of utmost importance to us. Consequently, controlled substances have stricter rules and regulations (both government and/or agency imposed) that we all must adhere to, in order to ensure and promote that safety. Your provider may prescribe certain medications within this category, such as stimulants, benzodiazepines, and sedative-hypnotics. While every provider has their own preferences, no provider is required to prescribe a psychotropic that is beyond scope of care or comfort level. As a general rule, we all adhere to the general practice of minimizing the use of such psychotropics due to their abuse potentials. Most, if not all, our providers do not prescribe pain medications such as opiates. If any controlled substances are prescribed, there will be regular checks with the Prescription Monitoring Program (to promote safe prescribing and dispensing practices for the covered medications) and agreement must be given to follow the prescription protocols we have in place.
