What is individual psychotherapy?

Individual psychotherapy is a relationship between you and a Licensed Psychologist or other licensed mental health provider with the goal of changing your behavior to produce positive outcomes in your life. Individual psychotherapy is also known as “talk therapy” because you will talk to your therapist about problems you are having in your life. Psychotherapy can help you learn how to lessen unwanted symptoms or behaviors while developing healthier life habits and coping strategies. For example, maybe you would like to feel less anxious in social situations or perhaps you would like to have better sleep habits.

What can I expect during a therapy session?

Individual therapy starts with an Intake Session which is about 50-60 minutes long. During this session, the therapist will ask questions to get to know you, to identify the presenting issues, and to determine whether they are the best person to help you. Since psychotherapy is most importantly a relationship, you will be determining whether you feel the therapist is a good fit for you as well.

Most counseling sessions start out on a once-a-week basis and range between 40-50 minutes long. The first four sessions are part of an evaluation process in which you and your therapist are determine goals for therapy, getting to know one another, and assessing whether that therapist is the best fit for you.

Therapy may involve just a few sessions on a short-term basis to target a very specific problem or can be longer-term for more persistent, complex and ongoing issues.
