Occupational Therapy

Occupational Therapy

OT is Play with a Purpose!

Many people have difficulty mastering daily living tasks such as buttoning a shirt, completing a morning/evening routine, or coordinating utensils. Our occupational therapists work with clients on maximizing independence in everyday living skills and functional tasks through meaningful activities or ‘occupations’.

At Spectrum Transformation Group, our certified occupational therapists are committed to helping clients with occupational challenges reach their full potential and meet their goals. Here at Spectrum, we are passionate about working with families to create personalized treatment and customized approaches for success.

Services begin with a holistic evaluation of strengths and opportunities for growth, including both standardized sensory and motor skills assessments, parent interviews, and clinical observation. If determined eligible, your therapist will work with your family on developing an individualized treatment plan to increase independence and adaptiveness.

What types of issues are addressed in Occupational Therapy?

Adaptive Strategies

Occupational Therapists can identify adaptive strategies to maximize function. Visual or physical adaptations, adjustments, and/or equipment may greatly help a person function more independently. For example, a personalized visual schedule may help someone complete a task or routine quicker and more efficiently.

Motor skills

Occupational Therapists are skilled in helping people learn new motor skills they need for daily activities. For example, to put on a pair of pants, a person needs to balance, hook their thumbs into a waistband, and stand on one foot.

Executive Functioning Skills

Executive Functioning Skills help with self regulation for adaptive behavior across environments as well as for planning and organizing routines. For example, during an occupational therapy session, the client and therapist may work on identifying emotions during challenging events. After therapy, a client could be able to select calming strategies practiced with their therapist during stressful situations.

Sensory Processing

Sensory Integration Therapy helps individuals better understand and organize information from the body and environment for adaptive behavior. For example, an occupational therapist may recommend different lighting for people with visual sensitivity or work with a client on tolerating different textures (sand, glue, gloves, etc.) on their hands.

Daily Living Skills

Occupational therapy helps individuals perform daily living skills at a functional and developmentally appropriate level. Occupational therapists assist in creating strategies to maximize independence in feeding, dressing, grooming, as well as identify special equipment needs. OTs can help people use utensils, button or zip their clothes, and brush their teeth.

Our occupational therapists have special training in working with clients with feeding issues. OTs work with clients who have difficulty moving their lips/tongue/jaw, have a hard time with seeing/ touching/ eating different textures and varieties of food, and/or coordinating utensils.

Play Skills

Some children have difficulty knowing how to play or how to play appropriately. Occupational therapy can help children access and interact with play materials. Examples include holding a marker/pencil correctly, attending to a play activity, or going through an obstacle course.

Our Process

Evaluation

In order to get started with any service at Spectrum Transformation Group, you must fill out a Client Screening Form.

After you have heard back from us, the next thing to do is talk to your doctor. Insurance companies require a doctor’s order to begin assessment and intervention. We cannot schedule the first session until we receive a doctor’s order.

Next, in order to properly assess and provide recommendations and/or treatment to a client, the Occupational Therapist conducts a comprehensive Evaluation based on each client’s individual needs. Our Evaluation process combines standardized assessments with client/family interviews, observation, and skill assessments.

The Occupational Therapist will then set up a follow-up appointment to review the Evaluation results and develop a functional treatment plan.

Next Steps

Once a determination has been made that a client requires occupational therapy, we will work with you to schedule follow-up therapy sessions.

We will focus on parent involvement (where applicable), keeping you in-the-loop with each therapy session and encouraging/training home practice.

We will revisit our therapy plan on a regular basis to ensure our focus continues to match the client’s needs.

If interested in learning more please call us at 378-6141 or start the process by filling out our Client Screening Form.
